Vivoactive GPS Smartwatch: Garmin's Answer to Wearable Tech Competition

Date Posted:1 December 2015

It’s a GPS smartwatch with multisport functions. It’s a fitness activity tracker. It’s a smartwatch. Vivoactive is Garmin’s answer in today’s wearable tech market. It’s the “jack-of-all-trades” type of watch targeted for sports and fitness enthusiasts as well for those who always want to stay connected online. You may have heard the saying hitting two birds with one stone, vivoactive is an impressive attempt to hit multiple sports with one watch.

With Garmin’s top-notch GPS technology, the vivoactive is pre-loaded with sports apps for running, biking, swimming, and golfing. You can also download third-party sport and fitness apps, and customise the watch face with the Garmin developer platform – Connect IQ. It works with the iPhone and compatible Android smartphones.

Use One Watch for Different Sports

For runners and cyclist, vivoactive can track your pace, time, distance, speed and heart rate when paired with a Garmin heart rate monitoror other ANT+ heart rate monitor. Using compatible speed and cadence sensors, you can also measure your progress on cycling trips.

For swimmers, the auto length accelerometer-based technology automatically measures the total and interval distance; laps; calories burned; session average, interval and length pace; and stroke count, including number of strokes per length and interval and session averages. The swimming app calculates your efficiency with swolf, which adds the time and the number of strokes it takes to swim a pool length. It’s waterproof for up to 50 meters which is ideal for swimming and snorkelling.

For golfers, vivoactive has built-in golf app that measures your shot distance (calculates exact yardage for shots from anywhere on course), yardage to F/M/B (distance to front, middle and back of green), and yardage to layups/doglegs. You can also download more than 38,000 course maps from Garmin’s international golf course database.

Track Your Daily Fitness Activities

As part of Garmin’s “vivo” lineup, vivoactive has an activity tracking app that counts your steps, calories burned, and distance walked throughout the day. The auto goal feature learns your daily activity level and then recommends the ideal daily step count goal. Depending on how you perform each day, it will auto adjust your goal for the next day. The move bar appears on the display after an hour of inactivity. You just have to walk for a couple of minutes to reset it. It also include sleep monitoring which determines your total sleep and periods of movement or restful sleep.

Stay Conveniently Connected

vivoactive pairs with compatible Bluetooth-enabled smartphone to gently vibrate and display alerts for incoming calls, texts, emails and calendar items plus notifications from social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc) and other mobile apps so you never miss a beat even when working out. Important information is displayed right on your wrist while your phone is safely tucked away in your pocket. Caller ID and missed call information for incoming calls. Text messages include sender information and message. Email messages display with sender and subject.

You can even control the music on your compatible smartphones via Bluetooth. There's also a Find My Phone feature that works if your phone and vivoactive are paired and connected within 30 feet. If you forget where you phone is, this feature will make it ring and vibrate.
